This year I had the opportunity to serve on CMU PRSSA’s e-board as the Director of Finance. PRSSA is a student Public Relations organization that provides members with readiness and resources to succeed in the PR world. We host conferences, internship fairs, speakers and workshops to develop our network and learn as professionals.
With my position as Director of Finance, I was very excited to take on this new role. I enjoyed being a general member of PRSSA but anticipated new ways that I could be challenged to grow individually. In my position I am responsible for collecting member dues, organizing chapter fundraisers and co-leading the Chapter Events committee.
I was very nervous to start this position because I have never led a committee or had much experience with fundraising before. The Chapter Events and Fundraising Committee brainstorms fundraisers, monthly chapter socials and plans the end of the year PRSSA banquet. In the past PRSSA has not had many fundraisers executed, so my goal was to make profit (even if it was small) and have consistent scheduled fundraisers throughout the school year.

This role has came with many challenges and has been a great learning experience. I’ve learned about the importance of communication and all the details that go into strategically planning a fundraiser. Sometimes my schedule was delayed compared to what I anticipated because multiple steps had to be made prior to moving forward.
Overall, I am very grateful for this experience and the relationships I have formed with my fellow e-board, committee and my wonderful co-chair Bri Brugel. I believe I can take what I’ve learned about finances, organization and event planning to my future PR job and I cannot wait to do so!
